Michael Townsend

Speaker Bio

As vice president of the Office of Legislative and Regulatory Affairs for Charles Schwab, Michael Townsend handles policy issues and is responsible for developing and implementing Schwab’s public- policy communications strategy. He analyzes legislative and regulatory proposals to determine how they would affect individual investors, retirement plan participants, and investment advisers. As an advocate for individual investors, he communicates their interests to lawmakers, the media, employees, and clients. He also contributes legislative and political analysis articles to several company publications.



Previously, Mike was head of the Financial Services Legislative and Regulatory Issues group for Powell Tate, a Washington, D.C., public affairs firm. Prior to that, he served as press secretary and legislative assistant to Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine), was an aide to Senator William Cohen (R-Maine), and a press secretary to the Senate Special Committee on Aging. Mike has a bachelor’s degree in English from Bowdoin College and a master’s degree in English from George Mason University.
