Speaker Bio

Christopher Smart, PhD, is head of macroeconomic and geopolitical research at Barings, where leads the analysis of economic trends, political developments, and financial markets.



Previously, he was senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and at the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government, a part of Harvard Kennedy School. Before that he served as special assistant to the president at the National Economic Council and the National Security Council, where he was a principal advisor on trade, investment, and global economic issues. Prior to that, he was the deputy assistant secretary of the Treasury, where he led the response to the European financial crisis and designed U.S. engagement on global financial policy. Dr. Smart has a bachelor’s degree in history from Yale University and a doctoral degree in international relations from Columbia University. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and holds the CFA® designation.
